Problem with HP Scanner and Windows XP

Hi
I have an HP 3970 Scanner. It has been working fine until today. I
tied to scan a document into Paper Port and the scanner is no longer
showing just a blank space. It will not work with the HP Image
software but will work and scan into Microsoft word and when using the
scanner wizard. I cannot insert scanner image from any program other
than word. Using Windows XP Home. Have tried Restore back to when I
knew the scanner was working properly but it makes no difference. The
only things I have installed since it was last working are games.
