Problem with HP cartridge no. 344

On week-old HP 6540d printer, I'm getting following error:

There is a problem with the Tri-color Print Cartdridge.

To solve the problem:

1. Remove the print cartdridge.
2. Re-insert the print cartridge.

If the problem persist, Replace the print cartridge.
===

The printer won't print anything with this cartdridge inserted, except
the cartridge check page (power + x button). Additionaly, the driver
shows, that the cartdridge is empty, but it isn't (it is new, after
all).

Is there any way, how to get it working? I'm not rushing to buy a new
cartdridge, because this same could happen again.

You might try cleaning the cartridge contacts as shown at
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00058182
It is also rare but possible that you have a cartridge that has failed. In
that case contact HP or your dealer, they should replace the cartridge under
warranty.

The same happened to my new black ink cartridge on my HP 3520. With
color cartridge it's fine, as soon as i insert the black one - it dies.
Happened twice (i returned the first one, the same happened with the
replacement i got).

Thank you for you help, Bob.

Cleaning the cartdridge and printer contacts did not help.

It is interesting, that the cartdridge did work out of the box. I
printed the sample page (the fruit picture) and one page with my own
image. Then, few days later, while printing B/W lineart, it started
complaining about color cartdridge.

The power + x button test page shows following:

56. STAT = 8
57. LOI = 95

66. STAT = 0
67. LOI = 91

Other lines are the same for color and bw cartdrige, and the color
patters are printed too.

The Stat=8 indicates a problem with the color cartridge, the LOI =95 means your
cartridge is nearly full. Please post here or email me the contents of 52 and
53. I do not know about the support in your country; if you were in the US I
would suggest you call 1-800-HPINVENt for warranty service, the would send you
a new cartridge. You can find contact information for your country at:
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/wwcontact.html .
