problem with groups reporting headers not downloaded

I'm using Windows Mail in Newsreader mode only.
I subscribe to two groups with which I have a problem.
these are microsoft.public.outlook and
microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management
these two groups constantly tell me there are 2 or 11 messages not
downloaded even when I do catch-up. I have unsubscribed, deleted the
newsgroup folders in my message store and re-subscribed but the messages
keep coming.
Is there a way to re-set something so that these two groups do not
constantly report un-downloaded messages?

Thanks

Try going to Tools | Options | Read and uncheck the option to download xxx
headers at a time and see if that helps.

Nope - still the same.....

This is ridiculous - I just removed the MS News account and deleted ALL
files in the Windows Mail news folder. I then added the MS news server as a
new account, re-subscribed to all my news groups and these two groups are
STILL showing as having headers that are not downloaded. Is there a registry
entry somewhere that is mucking this up?

Gordon, what you are seeing are known has "Ghost Messages", this happens
when the message count on the server becomes out of sync.
You can do nothing about it locally.
MS intermittently reset their servers to rectify the problem.
The Ghosts will go at that point, ignore them.

Gordon, I subscribed to both of those groups to test.

In the Outlook group I see 4,011 messages, 4,010 unread, 2 not downloaded.

In the vista.file_management group: 857 messages, 856 unread, after a sync
the folder list shows 3 new, but none exist on entering the group.

In my experience, the number of ghosts will change each time you sync.

As mac indicates, if you still have some "not downloaded" its a bug that has
persisted from OE and probably will never be fixed.

It did!!

The next sync, showed 15 not downloaded in the Outlook group.

Interesting this little anomaly does NOT occur if I subscribe to the same
groups on the same server using Thunderbird.....
