Problem with Google shortcut on desktop

I am using Vista Ultimate.
I have a shortcut to 'http://www.google.com' on my desktop/
When I double click on it, I get the Google window all right, but
I also always get an error window which says Windows can't find
'http://www.google.com'. It asks if I spelled the URL correctly.
I have to click OK to try again.

I don't get that error when I enter the URL directly to a Firefox
window. I do continue to get the error if I create another identical
icon shortcut.

Any idea what is going on>

Thanks

How are you creating this shortcut please?

No matter how I create it, it works fine.

Right click empty area on desktop>new>shortcut
I enter http://www.google.com and an icon name.
Same as I do with other web shortcuts on this and other machines, and
have done since forever.
Works for other web addresses if you believe that!

Thanks

Try the built in Internet Explorer method.

Make sure that the menu bar is showing. Right click in the empty space to
the right of the home page tab. Place a check by "show menu bar".

Then go to the google home page.

Go to the menu bar, File | Send | Shortcut To Desktop

Does this work?

I have been having a similar problem. Maybe this can help.

After Google page open, just drag the icon in IE address bar onto
desktop.

Way did for Google.ca and no problem with desktop shortcut
using Vista Ultimate.

I get the message that Windows cannot find the URL when the browser is not
running. Windows reports the error as the browser is loading. If the browser
is running, I do not get the message.

Yes, identically. That is - the short cut icon is on the desktop
fine, but when I double click on it I get the Google window PLUS THE
ERROR WINDOW.
