Problem with games

Hi
Can anyone help me with this problem?

My system has:

Dual Pentium4 3.4Gh processors.
Radeon 9800 Series graphics, with the latest version 5.7 Catalyst drivers.
1gb Ram memory.
A TFT Monitor.
Operating system Windows XP Home V5.1.2600 with SP2

Some time back I installed:
Medal of Honor- Pacific Assault
FIFA 2003
And recently
Age of the Empires 11 Trial

At the start of the three games everything is fine, the Graphics are smooth
and clear, the sound is perfect.

The system then drops out and restarts at random times in the games.
Sometimes they play for only 5 minutes and other times for 30 or more minutes.

When the system restarts, it sometimes boots to the logon screen and other
times brings up the file checker before it goes to the logon.

I have had the system checked for the ability to play the games at
Microsoft.com,
The system is way above the benchmark to play them.

Things I have done to try and get them to play:

Disk clean up.
Error checking.
Clean out temporary files
Delete files incl. offline content
End start up programs - Except the essentials
Use refresh rates 60 to 75 hertz
Use msconfig to disable all in startup tab
Tried different screen resolutions

I shut down:

Anti Virus
Anti hacker
Spam killer
Auto updates
Privacy setting

I even ran the games in safe mode with the same result.

Hi Mike,

Great post - lots of information included making it easier to diagnose. :-)
As it is, I've seen this type of issue so many times, I've created a checklist

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :-)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Sounds like your pentium is reaching the thermal shutdown point. Download a
freebie program called Speedfan, and set it up to bleep repeatedly at 78c. If
you hear those bleeps just before shutdown, you have the cause. You have been
told in the previous thread how to clean out the dirt and dust in the
previous thread, but if it continues, you have either a cpu fan that's not up
to the job,and will need to be upgraded or the case cannot vent the excess
heat, and will need either replacing, or extra case fans added.

Hi and
Thanks Jimmy and Dennis for your response.
I have checked in my BIOS setup utility-PC health and it records the
following.

Smart fan control - enabled
Shut down temperature - disabled
Also
CPU temperature 63c
Sysytem temperature 42c

CPU fan speed 0rpm
Sys fan speed 1757rpm

Can you tell me does this indicate a duff CPU fan. Should it run
continuously or is it temperature controlled.
I have begun to dust and clean the vents but have not yet opened the case
since I am expecting an additional hard drive and would like to carry out
cleaning and installation at the same time.
The system is only six months old and the CPU fan will still be warranteed.
Regards
Mike

I got the same CPU as you.

The recommended maximum temp for a pentium 4 is 70c, and thernal shutdown is
at 80c. The thermal shutdown is built into the CPU, if your at 62c then there
is either a lot of dust or fluff on your fan and heatsink, or you got that
pile of junk that intel call a fan, or you have a case that does not vent out
the hot air.
DOWNLOAD SPEEDFAN, it shows cpu, most hard drives, and case temps. I'll say
again, DOWNLOAD SPEEDFAN. The recommended maximum case temperature is 38c

If your running the cpu at 62c on idle (only the basics running) then you
are reaching thermal shutdown with the game you are playing. Medal of Honor
is cpu intensive, and graphics card intensive. so the heat rises dramaticly
in the case.

When you open the case, check to see if there is an Intel logo in the
middle of the fan, if there is, then throw it away. I use a fan made by
"Arctic Circle" called "Freezer 7", and it reduces the temps 10c-15c below
the reference Intel crap. If you get it, post and i'll give you instructions
on how to install it. It is one of the cheapest around.

The Intel BIOS is the worst thing to control your fan, it is designed to
run your cpu hot( hot semiconducor=shorter life=more profit for intel).
DOWNLOAD SPEEDFAN and it will take control of your case, and cpu fans.

What size rear fan do you have. If your not sure, then get the distance
between the fan mounting screws in mm, and post them.

Oh bollocks, hunt out FRED_ANON2000 on yahoo. and we can do this one to one
on messenger. Add me too your list of contacts and we can arrange dates and
times
