The request comes in frequently, fills itself out , and then I have to exit.
Is there a way to avoid this? This is a stand-alone computer; I didnt'
have this pop-up until a few months ago and I can't get rid of it.

You haven't given us enough information to get a specific answer. Where
does the request come from? A website? Your email program? ISP software
used to access the Internet? Post back with a better explanation of
your setup, when the request for password comes, and how you connect to
the Internet.

The Pop-up appears when I log on to Outlook, and when I log off. Sometimes
it occurs while I'm using Outlook. use comcast net., a cable connection.
The box seems to be coming from the mail program itself. It says "Enter
Network Password, lists my server, ,my user name and password, plus a box for
me to check if I want to save the password in the password list. Sometimes I
check it, sometimes I don't. But the whole thing goes away only if I exit
with the x in the upper right. I'm not on a network; can't I just get rid of
this? It didn't used to be there.
