I have Microsoft XP and am trying to use the Moviemaker. My video files are
saved in my Picture Motion Browser. When I tried to import them into
Moviemaker I received the following message: "The file C:\Documents and
Settings\Adam\My Documents\My Videos\New Folder\20080918061634.mpg cannot be
imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your
computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close
and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again." I
looked on the Microsoft Help page to see how to download codecs, but it said
that I should have an option to do so on the message (which I do not have).
Can anyone tell me how and which codec I need to download in order to import
and view my video files? Thank you!

Movie Maker has issues with MPEG files...
have a look at the following articles:

Movie Maker 2 - Importing MPEG Files
http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Importing-Video-MPEG2.html

File type compatibility with Movie Maker
http://tinyurl.com/v8tee
or...
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/MovieMaker/File_type_compatibility.htm

Maybe the following free converter would be worth a try:

Pazera Video Converters Suite 1.2
http://www.pazera-software.com/products/vcsuite/
(click the Blue download button not the Red one)

FWIW...the name of the file you are downloading is:
"Pazera_Video_Converters_Suite.zip"

Good luck.
