I'm running XP Pro and now for some reason certain web
url's do not resolve to the proper ip address. I have
changed DNS's and still have the problem. When I use
nslookup the proper ip address is returned. But issuing a
ping or putting the url in the browser locator returns
the wrong ip address.

For example nslookup www.google.com ;returns 216.239.41.99
but ping www.google.com attempts to ping 207.44.220.30

The samething occurs if I try search.msn.com. The
nslookup works, but ping attempts to reach 207.44.220.30.

If I put the IP address of google in the browser url
locator google web site appears.

Any ideas as to why this happens?

sometimes sites do redirection when you actually connect to them. Also
there have been strange internet DNS issues lately due to Verisign altering
DNS referals.

Thanks for your response. I tell how I thin the problem
began is I was doing a search on google. Click to a link
that was in the search. Several pop-up began to appear. I
used alt-f4 to close the pop-up's as fast as I could.

I later attempted to return to google and the symtoms I
stated previously started to occurr.

Thanks for your responses:

I found the problem. My \windows\system32
\driver\etc\hosts file was fine. But, there was another
host file \window\help\hosts with bogos entries. I did
not think there were other hosts files, but a search
revealed this one. And apparently something populated
that file with entries. And also dns name resolution
honored that file instead on the normal \etc\hosts...

Search the registry for that hostfile and pathname. Windows normally uses
the \etc\hosts file so perhaps someone changed the default local lookup.
