This has happened after a reinstall of windows due to busted hard drive,
it is xp home sp2, the printer is a Dell A940 multipurpose.
It scans and photocpies just fine, but attempting to print we get
"The specified print monitor is unknown"
Using the only available driver on the dell website, we have unistalled
and reinstalled...
Any useful ideas appreciated

Well, the printer works otherwise you would not be able to copy things,
or scan. This means it is almost guaranteed to be a software problem.

I would suggest completely uninstalling the printer and associated
software, restarting the computer, then installing the latest firmware
update and driver for the A940. I have seen this fix most errors such
as this.

I would recommend getting the latest firmware
(http://ftp.dell.com/firmware/R74855.EXE) for the printer as I
understand that addresses a number of small, but annoying items. Just
download this file and run it with the printer connected and powered
on.

The latest driver is available from the Dell support website
(http://ftp.dell.com/printer/R56532.EXE, with instructions available at
http://tinyurl.com/32bcso.

If you have any questions on this, or if the uninstall-reboot-reinstall
of the printer driver doesn't fix the problem, please let me know.
