Problem with Defender Update

Defender asks me to update to the latest updates where it has the latest
updates.

Please help

Go to www.microsoft.com, click on the Windows Defender (beta 2) download
link, and download and run.
You have the latest engine and definitions, but there is slightly newer UI
code available.

WS, Can you please tell me exactly what you did to make things right? It
sounds like I have the same problem you had...did you download the entire
Defender program again?

Since installing the update, the home page now says "Latest Scan: Not
Available" and the history page is blank. This is in spite of my running a
quick scan immediately it was installed and scheduling a further scan for a
couple of hours later.

Any way I can put it straight?

Thanks
David

Hmm--if closing and re-opening the UI doesn't fix this appearance, I would
suggest:

1) disable real-time protection in your antivirus application
2) In Windows Defender, go to Tools, Options, and deselect the next to last
option (scroll down)--"Use windows defender"--i.e. shut it down.

3) go to control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender, and choose
Change, then next, then update.
(and just before that you might click the "click here for support" link
associated with the Windows Defender entry in add or remove programs, and
see whether it references the current 1347.6 build. There's a repair link
there--you can use that instead of the change update--I haven't spotted what
differences there might be between the two operations.)

After the update/repair, re-enable real-time protection from your antivirus.

I got the message to update, downloaded the update, and it told me me my
signatures are over 170 days old (from April). I used system restore to get
back where I started, with the older version 7/11 signatures.

How do I get the current signatures after the update? Or, alternatively,
how do I get rid of the notice that ai shold uoppdate?

The update will zero out the signatures. If you choose the default checkbox
to check for updates and do a scan, it should update and scan, assuming that
AutoUpdate is working on your system.

Were you upgrading from beta1, or from the earlier build of beta2?

If you were on beta2, was updating proceeding normally?

Updates for beta2 come via AutoUpdate or Windows or Microsoft Update. The
autoupdate can be triggered within the app by going to help, about, and
clicking on Check for Updates. This shouldn't normally be needed as the app
is by default set to check for updates before doing scheduled scans, for
example, and any visit to windows Update should bring in definitions, as
should autoupdate.

Thanks Bill

Coincidentally I ran a couple more scans and this time it fixed the home
page problem by itself. Not the History page problem but I will leave
Defender to operate for a week or so to see if it sorts itself out. If not I
will try your helpful suggestions. Many thanks
David

In answer to your questions, I'm trying to update from prev beta2
v1.1.1051.0. All previous signature updates have gone very smoothly, and I
do have auto-update on.

I updated WD once more this morning. I programmed a scan for an hour later.
The scan ran, but after, the signature file indicated 1.0.0.0 from 1/25/06.

Of note, at the finish of the WD update, it asked me if I wanted to check
for new signatures and do a quick scan. I said yes, and it did nothing. I
also went into help, selected "check for updates", and it did nothing.

I also tried to delete the sig file, per instructions in the
"troubleshooting" area of the web site. I was told the file wasn't there.

So, back to system restore, and the program tellimg me there's an update
available.
Is it possible I have to wait for the next NEW release of a signature file
for it to update?

Hello, could anyone help me.I have a message shoeing on the windows
defender(beta 2) telling me that I should update my definitions but each time
I do this I receive a message saying that 0*80004002 no such interface is
supported. Can anyone help me rectify this problem.
Thanks

Pumpkin,

Create a new message, don't post a question of your own in response to
another question.

Does AutoUpdate work on your system?
Try going to Windows Update and applying all offered critical updates.

Thanks. History page will stay blank unless something is found and you
choose an action, as the result of a scan or a setting to be notified of
changes to the system by known software.

Hello!
I was reading along when this statement caught my attention,
another question.Does AutoUpdate work on your system?
Try going to Windows Update and applying all offered critical updates.
http://update.microsoft.com
So off I went and checked the update time in which I had chosen. It was OK ,
IT WAS SET TO A TIME THAT MY COMPUTER WAS SET TO "ON" AND CONNECTED TO THE
INTERNET. Even though I have been told that it does not really matter, thats
ok also.
BUT DOES EVERYONE THAT USES BETA PRODUCTS KNOW?
On the left panel there is a Change Settings link, go into it and set/
select your personal settings. DON`T FORGET TO SELECT BETA UPDATES near the
bottom. Advanced: Show Beta Products and Updates, Select/ Check and then
APPLY the changes.
Hope this is of help!
