Problem with computer performance when LAN cable is connected

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 and I noticed a problem recently with the
general performance of my notebook when I connect the LAN cable. There is a
distinct delay when I perform certain operations such as right-clicking and
opening files. And when I unplug the LAN cable, everything reverts to the
normal speed.

This problem did not exist previously and there was no difference in the
performance between having the LAN cable plugged in or out. I can't recall
any significant change I made to my machine before this issue arose.

Can someone kindly advise on possible causes solutions to this problem?

Control Panel, Network Connections, right click on the LAN, Status
How much activity is there?

If you have a lot of activity, is it incoming or outbound?
Incoming could be several updates being downloaded.
Outgoing probably means trouble.

I've installed and run SpyBot and Ad-Aware but the problem persists. I've
posted the log from HijackThis in the forum as you've suggested.

There hasn't been any reply to my HijackThis log and while waiting, I was
told that there could have been a problem with my user profile. I then tried
using another administrator profile within my laptop and realised that this
could indeed be the solution. The lag in speed has diminished significantly.
But as my original profile contains all my customisations and settings and I
would like to retain them. Is there any way of copying all the customisations
and settings from one profile to another? Or is there a way of creating a new
profile based on the customisations and settings of an existing one?
 
It is possible to clone/import an existing profile into a new one.
However, it will likely carry forward whatever is the cause of
the networking issues.

To copy a "Profile" you must be working from a Tertiary account.
1. Original Profile
2. New Profile
3. A 3rd Administrator account to actually do the copy from
since an active profile cannot be copied while in use.

You have to log in to the new account one time, so XP can apply
the "Default User" Template to create account structures. Then
log in to the 3rd account and use System Properties, Advanced
(TAB), User Profiles, Settings, "Copy To" to clone the profile.
 
I would like to completely remove the 3rd administrator profile you mentioned
to perform the cloning as I would like to keep my machine clean from
additional and unwanted stuff. Can i do so by just clicking Delete in the
User Profiles window from the directions you provided? Will this completely
clear my laptop of all the files created for this profile?
