Problem with Command & Conquer Generals & Zero Hour?

I've been meaning to post about this for some time now, but I'm curious
if anyone besides myself has any performance issues with these games?
For example, if I play against two medium computer opponents or more
(especially if I don't assign teams), the game engine soon begins to
stutter and pause all the time. The game basically almost becomes
unplayable. I don't have this issue with any other games. I'm not
cranking up graphics detail either, I have it in 1024x768 with AA and AF
turned off in my ATI control panel.

I'm running a 2.8GHz P4 with 1GB RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. I
have all of the latest drivers for my hardware except for the video card
(running the Catalyst 4.1 drivers). I've had this performance issue for
as long as I can remember regardless of what driver sets I've used. Is
the game engine buggy or might it be something else?

Used to have crashing problems with ZH with the 3.10 Cats but, all other
driver before and after that including 4.1 and 4.3 work fine here on my
9800Pro.

You could try reinstalling Generals and ZH as a friend did have
performance issues with ZH until he reinstalled. Dont know what caused
it, just some file somewhere got borked I guess!

Really? Does everything run smooth when you play against multiple
opponents in skirmish mode? I find this problem somewhat perplexing
because it's happened with every Windows installation that I've done.
My machine hasn't had any problems reading the install discs either.
Thanks for the reply though. I guess I could try re-installing from my
other optical drive to see if that makes any difference.
