problem with changing keyboard mapping

Recently I changed a DC from Win2k to Win2k3. The client is a windows XP prof
SP2. The keyboard mapping is shown as US though we have an UK keyboard. I
added UK keyboard to the profile and want to leave this as default profile.

I deleted the US keyboard from the profile. However it reverts back to US
keyboard profile even for domain adminstrator.

Please advise how I can enforce UK keyboard profile for this user - Though
this may not be the right group, is it possible to set this up in Group
Policy?

PS: I posted the above question a moment earlier using my MSDN account and
realized that i may not get the reply and hence reposting this question with
technet credentials.

Hello Kannan,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I suggest you try to create a hardware profile and then
specify the default hardware profile for startup.
To create a hardware profile
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-
us/sysdm_hardware_profile_create.mspx?mfr=true

To specify the default hardware profile for startup
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-
us/sysdm_hardware_profile_default.mspx?mfr=true

Hope that helps!

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

Please note that the problem is in saving the keyboard mapping under regional
settings. The hardware profile does not have any regional settings
information. From control panel, I click regional and language options,
Languages, Details(button), added Keyboard/Uk and removed Keyboard/US.

The above settings are not getting saved permanently even if I login as
domain administrator.

Hello Kannan,

Do you mean the setting of Keyboard/UK always lost? If you set the regional

I wonder why i did not receive notificatioin of this message...

The setting UK is NOT lost. I REMOVE us keyboard so that ONLY UK keyboard
will be present as default. However the US keyboard mapping comes back and
forces itself as default.

Once the US keyboard is removed, it should remain removed. this is not
happening.

Hello Kannan,

I cannot reproduce your issue. I can remove the US keyboard and let the UK
keyboard as the default input language. Please confirm if the user has
local admin privilege.

For some reason or the other, I am not getting notification if a reply is
posted to this thread. I have tried logging in as domain administrator. It
DOES remove the US keyboard and enables UK keyboard. The moment, I log-off
and login back, US Keyboard is enabled and made default.

The complaint is that the change is NOT getting saved.

thanks

Hello Kannan,

I cannot reproduce your issue. I can remove the US keyboard and let the UK
keyboard as the default input language. Please confirm if the user has
local admin privilege.

| I wonder why i did not receive notificatioin of this message...
|
| The setting UK is NOT lost. I REMOVE us keyboard so that ONLY UK keyboard
| will be present as default. However the US keyboard mapping comes back
and
| forces itself as default.
|
| Once the US keyboard is removed, it should remain removed. this is not
| happening.

Hi Kannan,

How do I configure the default keyboard layout during login? To change this
perform the following:
1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
2. Move to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Preload
3. Double click on 1 and change the number to your local layout (you could
get this by looking at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout\Preload1). Click
OK
4. You may also change HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control
Panel\International\Locale to this value however it is not mandatory to do
so.
5. Close the registry editor
6. Logoff and then on again

Note: Make sure you select a country code that has been installed via the
control panel or your system will not boot.

A table of the codes to US and UK is given below:
00000409 English (United States)
00000809 English (United Kingdom)

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

| Hi Kannan,
|
| How do I configure the default keyboard layout during login? To change
this
| perform the following:
| 1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
| 2. Move to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Preload
| 3. Double click on 1 and change the number to your local layout (you
could
| get this by looking at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout\Preload1). Click
| OK
| 4. You may also change HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control
| Panel\International\Locale to this value however it is not mandatory to
do
| so.
| 5. Close the registry editor
| 6. Logoff and then on again
|
| Note: Make sure you select a country code that has been installed via the
| control panel or your system will not boot.
|
| A table of the codes to US and UK is given below:
| 00000409 English (United States)
| 00000809 English (United Kingdom)
|
| Thanks & Regards,
|

Dear Kannan,

Thank you for posting back.

As my colleague Ken is currently out of the office, I will reply your
latest post. I appreciate the time and effort on the previous
troubleshooting steps.

Based on my test, the behavior may occur if the non-Unicode program is
still set to English (US). In this situation, the (Keyboard - US) will be
added automatically even after being removed by design.

At this stage, we can take the following steps to see if we can change the
"Default Input Language" permanently.

1. Log on the machine as the user account with the administrator rights.
2. Open the Control Panel
3. Click Regional and Language Options
4. Click on the Language tab and then click Details
5. Add the Input Language/keyboard "English (Unite Kingdom)" then click OK
and then set it as the default input language.
6. Remove the English (US) and then Click OK.
7. In the "Regional and Language Options" window, click Advanced tab.
8. Please set the "Language for non-Unicode programs" to "English (Unite
Kingdom)"
9. Check the option "Apply all settings to the current user account and to
the default user profile".
10. Click Apply and click OK to apply the settings.

After that, the setting will be applied to the default user profile.

For the test purpose, please first create a new user account (local) and
then log on the Windows XP machine as the newly created account to see if
the "Default Input Language" is set to UK. If the issue does not occur on
the newly created local account now, let's go ahead and then log on the
machine as the original user account to see how it goes. NOTE: We may need
to change the default Input Language to the "English (UK)" and delete the
English (US) again.
