Problem with CDROM and Explorer

Whenever there is a disk in the cdrom and I try to use Explorer to look
at a directory on the hard drive .. it locks up trying to read the
cdrom. It just sits there for a long time and I can't do hardly anything
because it is checking the cdrom.

I can hear the drive and the light is on. If I pop the drive out then
explorer works just fine .. it also works fine if there is no disk in
the cdrom.

How can I fix this?

Does it happen with all CDs? If CD contains lots of large files (eg
pictures), it can be very slow.
