My scanner is now refusing to scan anything. At start up the scanning light
comes on and the carrier only move from the front end to the far end of his
travel and keeps running there trying to go through the wall !! until I
unplug the USB cable.

I removed it from XP, installed it again many times, I downlaod the driver
from Canon to double check. No succes.

Any idea ??

Thanks in advance for your input

My 650U has never worked properly since I got XP. Usually I get one scan
out of it, then I have to unplug the cable and re-attach. It seems to
work better with Vuescan than with the supplied driver, although Vuescan
is probably overkill for a little flatbed.

I recommend that you update your software to an XP compatible software.

Have you done the Windows Update?
Windows XP must be updated to SP2 for USB to work correctly.

It you are using SP2:
You maybe should reinstall your USB drivers.
Go into Device Manager and delete (uninstall) the Enhanced controller.
Reboot computer.

XP will then re-load the USB driver from the XP cache.
