The most likely reason for these browser issues are Malware or PEBCAK.

*** When was the last time the system was scanned for the presence of
malware ? ***

Do you install *everything* that is offered to your system when updating
applications (flashplayer, etc.), programs (iTunes, etc), or runtimes
(java/.net, etc) ?

may be..!

but one thing i've to mention here. my recent update was NAV..!
may be its a free (pirated) ver..when the system asked for premium
edition i said NO
and uninstall NAV where i cudn't succeed..!

Strongly suggest you format the Hard Drive and reinstall XP.
Enable the native XP firewall in Control Panel now if this is XP RTM !

Then manually download, save, and apply Service Pack 1, if it's not
included on the installation CD. If it is, then SP3.

After you've done the above, install a free AV that is compatible with
Windows and is legitimate.
Avast and AntiVir are 2 such AVs.

AntiVir free
http://www.free-av.com/

Avast free
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

And, for your system's sake, check every update that is offered for
FlashPlayer, Adobe Reader, iTunes, Sun java, etc. as they will try to
sneak in added "fluff" along with Security updates.
Some call this "fluff" crap. I can't post what I really think of
unnwanted "fluff" being prechecked and included with Security updates or
someone might be offended. <w>
