Some video drivers seem to have an automatic "bigger is
better" function that behaves as you describe.
I've read that some drivers have the option to shut this
dubious feature off.
A fix that has worked for me is:
1) hook up the external display
2) change the video driver settings so the external
display is the "primary" display
this fix may introduce some undesirable side effects like
dual display using outline view on laptop display and
normal view on external display would be reversed.

Question: A very high end PowerPoint show which contains
multiple video files launched directly out of slides works
great on my laptop, but when I show it through a
projection device it does not behave the same way. For
example, WMP files which run inside a slide on my laptop
work fine but when projected they expand to full screen.
WMP files that run by clicking on them run inside the
slide on my laptop but launch WMP and run full screen on
the projector. How can I make the projected presentation
behave the same way as it does on my laptop monitor?latest version of WMP. The videos play fine in WMP but in
PPT I onlyHave you tried installing (or reinstalling) the latest
version ofshow in my ppt show or pps. This also holds true for past
