Problem with AntiSpyware

For about a month now, Microsoft AntiSpyware resets itself after every use,
so that each time I start the program I am put into setup. It also will not
save any of my settings when I use the program. It seems to work OK when I
cancel out of setup, but it obviously isn't working properly.

I tried re-downloading and reinstalling the program, but this didn't fix the
problem.

Any ideas about what I should try?

Hi Richard,

Try these two solutions:

You can repair Windows AntiSpyware using Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel. Click Microsoft AntiSpyware and click Change. Click Next, and then
click Updªte.

Then, try these steps:

1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> type in -> command)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without the quºtes).
3) Close and re-open Windows Defender.

You can go ahead and do both of these--neither has any downside risk--and
see if that does the job.

Let us know whether it does, or nºt!

Good luck

Engel, I appreciate your suggestions.

I did complete the update through the Add/Remove on the Control Panel.
However, the part using the command prompt did not seem to work. I was
unsure whether there was supposed to be a space between the 32 and the msv,
so I tried it both ways (once with a space and once all run together). The
first yielded a message saying the specified module could not be found; the
second gave me a rather lengthy error message that I cannot recall.

So far there has been no change to the setup prompt greeting me when I begin
the program.

I don't know why this syndrome is so prevalent at the moment. This recipe
has worked for others:

1) uninstall Microsoft Antispyware
2) delete \program files\Microsoft antispyware and all subfolders.
You will lose access to all quarantined items, history, and custom settings.
3) reinstall Microsoft Antispyware taking care to use the newest version,
and be logged in as the administrator level user who will use it.

Bill:

Thanks very much for your help with this-- it solved the problem. It seems
the key was to remove the extra files even after the program had been
uninstalled. Now when I reinstalled the program it's working normally.

I believe that one or more of the .gcd files is internally corrupted
somehow--probably the one that stores such settings changes, but perhaps
another as well. If I had a live test case, I would try deleting or
renaming just that single file to see whether it is then recreated and the
problem solved--the original program design was amazingly self-healing.

However, I haven't had the time/patience/opportunity to test this first
hand, so I haven't dug deeper. It's probably easier to give those
instructions that I gave you than to get folks to go in and delete a
particular file.
