Upgraded from 1 gig to 2 gig memory, about once a week sometimes more often
it gets hot enough to shut down, is it the memory or the laptop. Used
Kingston memory.

If the notebook is two years old or older, it likely has detritus
blocking the cooling heat exchanger. Get a can of dust cleaner,
computer cleaner, etc, at a computer store like Office Depot, etc. Blow
out the cooling channel from the vents in the case backwards into the
fan input. If you have pets - cats, or German shepherd dogs - you will
have fur in the channels that will be blown back onto the inside surface
of the input air screen. You might need a long, thin, needle to peck
these out.

Reboot, and see if things have improved. If not, you will need to open
the case and do a detailing of the interior, paying attention to the
cooling fan output channel and the cooling heat exchanger inlet from the
fan. You will have to remove the fan to gain access to the heat
exchanger inlet.

Google Speedfan. Speedfan will report the current CPU(s) temperature(s)
in the Windows taskbar so you can keep an eye on the cooling capability.
