I am helping my mom with her computer. Her mouse does not work. I try to
install it but an error message comes up saying the inf was written for 95 or
later. It is a new computer and everything else works. I have tried different
mouses and they all come up with the same error message. I have tried
different usb ports and still the same. I can install any other usb devices
and they all work. I am not sure what to do with it. Can anyone help?

Mark,

No, this did not help. I am not sure what else to do. It still comes up with
the same message. I did notice though that when I looked on the device
manager there is three HID spots. I only have two, one for the keyboard and
one for the mouse. The third does not show what it is for. So when I
uninstall the third one and then go uninstall the one for the mouse and then
install it again the third one pops up again. Also the location for the mouse
says 0 does this mean anything? Also the third spot shows an error code of
28. Any other ideas? Thank you!

I would try removing all the "USB Root Hub" devices at the same time. All
will be re-found, so it's worth a try.

I'm beginning to suspect this is a 'touchpad' we are talking about for that
third HID (human interface device) It can be disabled with a checkbox in the
Properties of the device.

Mark,

It is a normal mouse on a dell desktop. It is a dell mouse. I have removed
all of them and let the computer refind them and it still happens.

Were any mouse drivers installed by Setup.exe or in the Add/Remove
Programs? It seems that someone (??) might have used an older mouse
driver install disk.

No, it was a brand new computer everything was set up for it already. All i
did was plug everything in and from day 1 it has said this with the mouse.
She has only had it a month and really has not done much with it because of
this problem. I have been trying to fix it since she bought it. I have tried
unistalling the drivers and reinstalling them and anything I could think of.
Nothing has worked. It does have the windows xp sp2 home edition installed on
it, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Check Dell's support site for any updates the machine may need, do not
download/install any that do not fix a specific issue. If updates from Dell
fail to produce positive results, contact Dell to rectify the issue or replace
any necessary components if not the entire PC.
