on my laptop, one key has started working, i have no idea why, but
it's sorta annoying me as it is the question mark and the forward
slash that are actually frequently used... i have checked the key
itself and i can't see a hardware problem that i can resolve, i've
cleaned it and all, there doesn't seem anything wrong with it and it's
seems just as good as any other key, but all the othew work and this
one key doesn't...

could it be a software problem... what can i do to fix it... and if i
can't fix it... is there a way within windows to reassign that key to
some other less frequently used key 'cos it's really too early to
replace this laptop but it's not worth sending it to a service
professional as it's no longer under warranty

As laptop keyboards are often non-servicable, the only solution is to repace
the whole keyboard. The chance that it´s a software problem is remote. You
can check it by booting from a W98 bootdisk and test the key in MS DOS.
If it won´t work there either, replace the keyboard.

Best of luck,

Ben

Hi Mike -

The keyboard on most Vaio's is not too difficult to replace yourself. A
source for parts is http://www.impactcomputers.com/ .

Indeed any competant person can probably replace the keyboard themselves
with no problems, just make sure you have some REALLY REALLY small
screwdrivers and if it seems stuck, don't force it, there could be another
screw hiding.... I've seen someone think it was stuck & ended up snapping
part of their case... If in doubt, ask a local computer store how much
they'd charge for doing it for you...
