problem when starting Outlook 2010

Hi all,

After installing Office 2010 (RTM) I get the following error when trying to
run Outlook:

'Cannot start MS Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window'

This seems to be a weird problem, as I have read serveral other postings
referring to this problem but none of the solutions mentionend seems to be
applicable for me. This is what I've tried:

- removed office14 per KB928218
- removed leftovers of a 2010Beta installation with a MS tool called
'Windows Installer CleanUp'
- removed all mail and data -accounts with 'ControlPanel > Mail'
- removed all 'c:\user\..' -Outlook related folders
- reinstalled Office2010 (14)
- tried to start Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Same problem...
However... Outlook2010 is starting fine in Safe-mode when holding down the
CTRL key at startup.
All the other 2010 apps seem to run/startup fine

Are there any log-files or diagnostic -regkeys that can be invoked to get
some more detail as to what is bugging me?
Config: Win7 x64 / Office2010 x64 RTM

No flame intended, but maybe you should have read my whole post, before
quoting the first lines.

All the solutions that come up on the Google search, I have mentionend as
'tried that' in my post.
It is not that I have done no search for myself.

Open to any other options ...

Have you given us all the symptoms and the entire error message?

This may be the issue. You have an add-in. There aren't any add-ins that run
with the 64 bit version of Office yet. Uninstall this version and install the
32 bit version. Unless you need to access monstrously large files, you don't
need the 64 bit version.

By the way, your response here is most definitely not a flame and, to tell the
truth, I did miss this in your original post: "tried to start Outlook.exe
/resetnavpane". I beg your forgiveness.

Thx for the suggestion, reason I installed the x64 version was because my OS
is x64 as well. Thought that a x64 bit version of office2010 should be a
better match.

Now for troubleshooting...
Removed x64 and installed the x86 version. Now I'm a step further, but a
step back as well. Outlook starts but the other apps, like Excel, Word etc.
report that certain program features are missing and suggest to re-install
their particular app. Added to that, Outlook seems a bit buggy as well.
Every action I try to do in Outlook itself, prompts me with the
Configuration panel, where it is self-configuring the app. It's a panel I'm
used too at a first-time startup, not each-and-every action I'm trying to do
after the first-time startup. Even when closing Outlook, it is 'Configuring
Progress' and finally crashes the app, with mso.dll being the 'Fault Module
Name'.

So in-all this RTM version of 2010 doesn't seem as stable as I thought it
would be, taken into account that maybe my PC is the culprit? I'm going to
revert back to 2007 (again!!). Went back to 2007 when I tried the
2010Beta(x64), after I found out the MobileDeviceCenter wasn't quite
compatible in the x64 version and it didn't sync my contacts. Now again, the
x64 add-ins being a showstopper... why releasing a x64 in all? (Hope someone
from the Office PG is reading this post as well)

Are there any extensive logging features as to why the program is
'Configuring Progress' over-and-over?
Will let you know if the revert to Office2007 gives me a stable app.

Reverted back to Office2007, no problem whatsoever... all office-apps
stable.

update...
Removed Office2007 and rebooted.
Choose again to install the x64 version of Office2010, because all the other
application (Word, Excel etc) were stable with this version (not the x86
version).
Install went fine.
Starting Excel and Word (2010x64), without any problems.
Starting Outlook, I got the error 'X Cannot start MS Outlook. Cannot open
the Outlook window'
Closing this panel returns me to the desktop without starting Outlook.

Starting Outlook and waiting for the above mentionend error, not clicking OK
Starting a cmd-box and navigating to the 'Outlook.exe' location and using
the /resetnavpane switch.
This does not resort any effect until I close the first error message
Outlook is than restarted and started as supposed to, full app.

So I searched a little further...

Starting only Outlook.exe from a commandbox works for me !!!! When I use the
shortcut created in the StartMenu, Outlook starts with the error message...
So, created a new shortcut from 'Outlook.exe' and tried to start this from
the desktop... problem... error message.
Okay, new option... tried to run the shortcut 'As Administrator' ...
bingo... Outlook starts as supposed to.

I'm puzzled.... as Word and Excel all run fine...
So I changed the 'Outlook-shortcut' Privilige Level to 'Run as
Administrator' and all is well, except for the fact that I'm prompted by the
UAC for starting Outlook 'As Administrator'.

Anyone ?

I can't think of why this is happening. Perhaps someone else will. Office
2010 32 bit should work fine on Windows 7 64 bit, too. Sorry I wasn't able to
help.

32bit is highly recommended unless you *need* 64bit for reasons other
than you use 64bit os. (Huge file support - over 2 Gb - is the only
reason to use 64bit)

However, this is not why outlook won't work or why you're having
problems with the 32bit build.

Since this was an upgrade over 2007, did your try a new profile?

Thx for your suggestions. I did not do an upgrade, but a 'clean' install
several times. I have tried the new profile suggestion many times as well,
to no avail.

As Brian Tillman suggested as well, I have reverted back to the 32bit
version once more. Problem I now have, is that every time I start Outlook or
one of the other apps, the 'first time installation' wizard is started. It's
the screen you get when you start an application for the first time. After
that first time, it is not shown again. In my install, this screen returns
during each and every action I initiate in the Outlook application. When I
start ie. Excel, it reports missing dll's

What wonders me most, is the fact that when I remove 2010 and re-install
2007, all is well. And that the 2010 64bit <> 32bit version behave
differently in error. However, I think I'm gonna give it a rest and start
thinking about re-installing my PC... :-(

Any suggestions (once again) welcome...

Just a little follow up, as the issue is resolved.

Came across a post from someone who suggested to install the office -app
with the 'administrator' user, rather than an account with
'administrator'-priviliges. I have a 'normal' user account that i created
for using my PC.
I logged on as Administrator, did the office 2010 install, started each
application (Word, Outlook, Excel etc) to be sure the installation was
succesful. After that I logged off the administrator and logged on with my
normal user-account (which is member of the administrator group!). Each and
every Office 2010 app now runs fine, without ever getting the
'Configuring...' message, or reporting missing DLL's
