PROBLEM: W2K Restarting randomly - NOT a hardware issue - UPDATE issue

OK, I've read quite a few posts here about restarts/reboots - most
inconclusive.
So after I did the Windows updates a few weeks ago. Whammo - My stable
machine of 2+ years is randomly rebooting / shutting down. Sometimes going
to black screen and hanging.

AND my computer at work started doing this after updates.

AND my mom's computer 1000 miles away has started doing this.

All after recent updates.
All the same symptoms.

I'm putting $1,000 on the problem lies with Microsoft.

Anyone want to leak the inside scoop yet on when a fix will be released? ;-)

May i suggest unistalling the latest upgrade? This is accessable through
add/remove pragrams.
 
Well it's like this, your 3 PC's are rebooting and several million other
PC's aren't. So if you really want to solve the puzzle, What other thing
is common to the 3 PC's that are rebooting?
 
Actually I've talked to a lot of people who are having the same thing happen
after installing MSN and/or the last previous updates. Naturally there are
probably other things involved like MB type, etc... but I'm definate your
assumptions are just that while I've been trying to actually do something
about this and research it.

Uninstalling is not an option apparently in the add/remove programs section.

Guess I'll have to look at the sysoc.inf file or something.
 
Uninstalled SP4 - still had problem.

It's looking like an update previous to SP4 but we're talking an update that
was the same week unrelated to a SP, might of caused a problem with disc
handling.

Possibly swap file handling or files that may be being written to but were
damaged (easily fixed with a diskscan, etc) cause an error to shut the
machine down where as in the past, this error was handled silently or the
swap file was handled properly.

While hopefully checking and fixing the disc for errors has solved this
problem, it may remain and rear it's head when another error occurs in a
file...

I did read about some sort of error just like this which I'll have to track
down.
