Problem w/MS Carioca Rummy

Installed on XPHome SP2 fully updated system. Running DirectX 9 updated to Ap
2006. Have NVidia TNT Pro64 graphics card.
Rummy animation speed like a snail. Game runs in jerky fashion, very clumsy.
Have tried turning down animatin speed under options to no effect. Still same.
Additionally, game only allows drag and drop of card groups, and seems at
times to fail to recognize items in contracts. Had one message after several
hours that game had to close because unable to read memory.
Really like the game, but not much of a reward at this point. Do I have a
system problem, or is it the game program. Help, and thank you --

Hi qquirks,

Let's try some basic troubleshooting. If the problem still persists
please post back and we'll try some more steps. Good luck! :-)

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using this utility: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
or this method: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com and then
install Windows Defender from: www.microsoft.com/spyware to
remove any Spyware or Adware which could clog up your PC.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Some games
require a patch: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

5. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html

Hi, Jimmy S. --

First, thanks for direction to interesting web sites and programs.

After performing below, Carioca Rummy better, but still not very well. Now
it's about a 50%
faster snail, in comparison to programs like Canasta and Spite & Malice.

Second, here's what I found following your good advice:

1.Startup programs: five total. Got rid of Nvidia and ctfmon
Recguard
HPDJ Taskbar
IgfxTray
AVG7_CC
AVG7-EMC

2.No viruses at all (even ran April malicious)

3.ran CCleaner and defrag

4.spyware/adware removed
ewido anti-malware - Scan report
+ Created on: 11:11:37 AM, 4/21/2006
+ Report-Checksum: 8041E21A
+ Scan result:
C:\hp\bin\Terminator.exe -> Trojan.KillApp.30208 : Cleaned with backup

5.Microsoft Update said I had everything but optional updates relating to
smart card and issue
with IE7. Changed to Microsoft recommended July 28, 2003 Nvidia driver
package, from one
recommended by Radar Sync. Installed driver package successfully.

6.Ran DXDIAG after all this. Result below:

ANY FURTHER SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING CARIOCA RUMMY PLAY???
Thank you,
qquirks

Hi qquirks,

50% improvement is great.. here's how we might get the other 50%

You can change the priority of a program to speed it up, or slow it down.
Click Start / Click Run / Type: taskmgr and then press ENTER

- Right Click on the program and select: "Go To Process"

- Right Click on the process and "Set Priority" to High or Low as needed.

- You can speed up games even more by ending all other Applications that
are listed in the taskmgr, and right click to disable all icons by your clock.

- I was going to explain how to use the start command from the RUN
command line to launch any application from however this article is already
published on the internet and covers the entire buffet, including affinities. :-)
http://fox2k.net/2ktweaks/game_tuning_guide.htm

- You can slow down your games even more by running many programs,
or use the Moslo utility: http://www.hpaa.com/moslo/v132/moslo132.zip

Moslo Instructions - Note this is not for the casual player - Use only if needed:

Unzip the program to the same directory as the game you want to run slower.
For the next steps to work, you have to have that directory open in windows.
Note: Get the process name using taskmgr, then click Start / Search to Find it.

Next click Start / click Run / type: command and then press ENTER
At the DOS command prompt type: MOSLO /## GAME.EXE

Note: ## is a number (actually, percentage ... using /50 runs the game at half
normal speed) and GAME.EXE is the name of the game you want to play. :-)

When I am checking my start up with Spybot it says ctfmon is a bad

OK, new advice. I'm getting a little confused here. I think the program has
some problems in design which slow it down, the way it drops and drags player
cards. Do I really want to reset priority to high under task manager if it's
a programming slow down? Never reset a priority. So am asking.

re: Win 2000 Tweak guide: As I say, am getting out of my depth. These
tweaks you know to work on XPHome SP2? Thank you for info.

Thanks Paul and Jimmy, will follow up on it.

Hey, Jimmy S, you hit a home run 100 percent again. Reset priority to "above
normal." 50% snail now 100% faster snail. However, scary message from
Microsoft about system instability if you reset a program priority. Is this
something to worry about as long as you reset priority back to normal after
you're done playing? Forgive my lack of understanding since every piece of
advice you've given has worked. Thanks --

Hi qquirks,

Awesome news! The warning you see only applies to that game.
Once you exit the game, the priority for the game no longer applies,
since the game is no longer running on your system. Rest assured. :-)

||| Hi qquirks,
|||
||| 50% improvement is great.. here's how we might get the other 50%
|||
||| You can change the priority of a program to speed it up, or slow it down.
||| Click Start / Click Run / Type: taskmgr and then press ENTER
|||
||| - Right Click on the program and select: "Go To Process"
|||
||| - Right Click on the process and "Set Priority" to High or Low as needed.
|||
||| - You can speed up games even more by ending all other Applications that
||| are listed in the taskmgr, and right click to disable all icons by your clock.
|||
||| - I was going to explain how to use the start command from the RUN
||| command line to launch any application from however this article is already
||| published on the internet and covers the entire buffet, including affinities. :-)
||| http://fox2k.net/2ktweaks/game_tuning_guide.htm
|||
||| - You can slow down your games even more by running many programs,
||| or use the Moslo utility: http://www.hpaa.com/moslo/v132/moslo132.zip
|||
||| Moslo Instructions - Note this is not for the casual player - Use only if needed:
|||
||| Unzip the program to the same directory as the game you want to run slower.
||| For the next steps to work, you have to have that directory open in windows.
||| Note: Get the process name using taskmgr, then click Start / Search to Find it.
|||
||| Next click Start / click Run / type: command and then press ENTER
||| At the DOS command prompt type: MOSLO /## GAME.EXE
|||
||| Note: ## is a number (actually, percentage ... using /50 runs the game at half
||| normal speed) and GAME.EXE is the name of the game you want to play. :-)

||||| 2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com and then
||||| install Windows Defender from: www.microsoft.com/spyware to

|||||
||||| 3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
||||| / Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run

||||| 4. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
