Problem using "add hardware"

When I click on "add hardware" my monitor switches to standby and the
HDD access light flicks every few seconds. I tried leaving it for up
to half an hour but eventually closed down and rebooted.

I have never had this problem with my XP machine before.

Are you trying to add hardware, and if so, what? You might try removing
whatever you are adding and see if the problem is still there. It sounds
like whatever you are adding is screwing with XP.

I was trying to get it to reinstall my monitor. For some reason the
computer had started using the "default monitor" instead of the one it
had previously used.

Just get the correct .inf for your monitor.Don't use add new hardware. Go in
to the Device manager click on your monitor and change driver.
