I'm having a hard time getting the Catalyst 3.5 drivers to work.
My system:
Pentium 4, 3.06 with hyper-threading
Windows XP Pro
1GB of RAM
ASUS P4T533-C motherboard
AIW 9700 Pro
DirectX 9.0a
When I originally installed the AIW 9700 Pro, I used the
drivers\software from the installation CD. This gave me Catalyst 3.1
and MMC 8.0 Everything with this configuration was fine.
Deciding that I wanted to give Catalyst 3.5 a try, I first removed
the 3.1 suite from my system. I did a clean uninstall using the
uninstall guide from rage3d.com and made sure that ALL old ATI files
and registry entries were removed.
I then installed the Catalyst 3.5 suite. At first it seemed ok
but then when I tried the DirectX tests using dxdiag, I noticed a few
problems:
-the DirectDraw test where the bouncing white box goes full screen
gave me a black screen. I couldn't see the box.
-the Direct3D tests that test the Direct3D 7 interface and Direct3D 8
interface both give me a black screen. I can't see the spinning cube.
However, the Direct3D 9 interface test DOES work. I can see the
spinning cube on that one.
At first, I figured this was probably just a quirky problem with
dxdiag, but then I tried a few games. I get black screens on many
games. I can hear the sound, but there is no picture at all, just a
black screen. This only seems to happen for games that were written
for Direct X 8. Current DirectX 9 games are ok and playable.
I uninstalled the 3.5 suite and went back to 3.1 and everything is
back to normal - all dxdiag tests work and all games are playable.
To try and troubleshoot this, I updated my motherboard's chipset
drivers. The ones that I found for my P4T533-C board were version
4.10.1012 which I believe are the most recent. I installed these
first and then tried the Catalyst 3.5 suite again but this didn't
solve the problem. So once again I reverted to 3.1
Anybody have any ideas on what the problem could be here or am I
stuck with Catalyst 3.1 forever?
