Problem upgrading RAM

Hi, I have a Dell Pentium III 933 Mhz with 256 Mbs of 133 SDRAM and
WindowsXP.

I purchased another 256 Mbs of SDRAM 133 to upgrade. When I put it in,
the BIOS recognizes it without problem, but Windows starts loading and
then a blue screen appears telling me it stopped the system to prevent
any damage to my computer. It also tells me to remove any new hardware I
installed and other blabla.

I tried with low density and high density RAM chips and both didn't work...

Any idea what could be going wrong?

Guillaume

Those two sticks of RAM must match in all attributes, not just bus speed.
If possible, get a RAM stick from the same vendor with the same model
number -- maybe even the same revision code. At a minimum, you must
have the same timing (e.g., CAS2) on both sticks.

Alternatively, trade in both 256MB RAM sticks for a single 512MB stick.

XP is pretty fussy about RAM matching.

Hello

Try the new stick by itself, also make sure it's the same
as the original memory that you have installed, or maybe
you could ahve a bad stick

Actually those two sticks are : 256 Mbs of 133 Mhz SDRAM unregistered
NON-ECC memory, 16 chip (low density).

How could they be more similar???

You might ask Dell support about your machine, a PIII 9xx is
old, they might have set the BIOS to some lower RAM, you
might need a BIOS update.

Greetings --

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

I am having the same problem with a pentium III 450
going from 64 to a second 64 to make 128 ram the bios is
picking it up but the same error appears and the machine
reboots. I did ecventually get the Xp installed and it
now happens happens at different points (the same error)
without warning the pc then reboots and starts again.

Hello

Well souinds like a issue with that particular pc model
from Dell and I guess your best source of info now
woudl be to talk to Dell about it

Al

The theory of mismatched RAM is not your problem. Your problem is the
Dell BIOS. I have P3 boards running with PC100 and PC133 mixed
it just runs at the 100.
