problem unpacking files

I got a new computer and installed winxp pro. It kept rebooting and a few
days later I noticed it couldn't unzip any files I downloaded (CRC failed)
but the files were ok(unziped on other computer). every thing was very
unstabe, programs would stop with windows error messages that mean nothing to
me.
So I bought a bigger power supply and tried to reinstall windows, But I
get messages "windows cannot copy the file 'Random_file_name'".
I installed DOS 6.22 from floppy no probs but the computer then failed to
run a self extracting zip file, the message being something like 'reading
sector failed'.
I did copy the winXP I386 directory to the hardrive and tried it install
from there but got messages telling me the file 'Random_file_name' is not a
windows XP image file. I have updated the BIOs ran a memory check, checked
hard drives and CD rom on other systems and check the windows CD and they are
all fine . So does anyone have any idea what the prob is? I am guessing
there is a fault in the motherboard or processor. Is there any way to check
either of these without swaping them with working parts?

TrueBlue,

Of course for pure simplicity, I would recommend that you visit your
motherboard setup and double check all of your settings first - then move
ahead with hardware testing.

Since you had access to another computer to unzip your files, you might
consider temporarily using some parts out of that other computer for
testing.

I would be very suspicious of faulty memory or a defective power supply. Try
temporarily replacing those components with the known good ones. If you do
so one component at a time, you may easily zero-in on the faulty hardware.
Alternatively, if you have more than one memory stick, you can try inserting
them one at a time. And of course if you find that your memory and power
supply are good, then at least you have eliminated them from further
consideration.

Next item on my suspicious-hardware-list would be the motherboard itself.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the reply thought it was useless to start with but it did lead me
to read up on FSB, SB, Hypertransport, none of which I have a firm grasp on.
The SB to CPU Frequency was set at 800MHz. So I set it to auto and
now the computer works.

Any idea how I am ment to know what The SB to CPU Frequency should be.

Refer to your mobo manual, or set it to defaults

Your message indicates that you didn't read my message nor have you ever read
a motherboard manual.

If you had read my message you would know that the default setting for SB
to CPU frequency is 800MHz which doesn't work.

"Refer to your mobo manual" you say? if the motherboard manual could tell me
what the SB to CPU Frequency should be why would it give me options?

If you don't know the answer and can't help please don't suggest I read the
manual or use default settings. A blind monkey would do that before asking
for help.

Since you dont mention the make of mobo I've no idea what default settings
are.
And since you stated it was a new PC the bios is usually set to defaults
Try learning before you post crap

Like I said if you read my message you will know the default setting. you
don't need to know what the motheroard is and even if you did that would not
tell you the default setting you would need to know the bios version, all of
which is irelevant as I told you the default setting.

Since you are aware that with 'new PC's the bios is usually set to
defaults' why pray tell did you suggest that I setting the bios setting to
default ?
