I bought one laptop that came with XP home edition and I
just upgraded it to XP Professional. I can't now to get
connected to Internet through my cable modem. I asked for
support from my High speed internet provider and I was
told that this problem occurs because I upgraded it
instead of install it and because of this, the upgrade
does not override some setting from the previous
installation and I have 2 at the same time. They said that
the only solution is to reformat my HD and install XP
professional on my HD in blank. This sounds crazy. Could
anyone tell me if it is really true and is the only
solution and that I have to lose all software that came
preinstalled with my laptop?

Thanks

Hey there -
Just came across microsoft article that might help you with your
problem.
It stated that if you have DHCP services being run then you will not
get connection to work (in simple layman terms)
Check to see if your DHCP client is running - it will be listed
through your control panel, admin tools then inside services.
You should be able to see it listed as in automatic for Startup type
and the satus is???
If it is not, start it - see if you can - if not then XP will have to
be a clean installation

Hope this answers your problem :)
