Motty

After a recent windows update on both of my computers
they have both had errors at start-up.
Here is a BREIF description

(...) This may have been caused by a recent
software/hardware change.

Options:
Restart computer at last known good configuration
Start windows normally.
Safe mode etc.

I cant remember all of it...

None of the options work and the computer only starts if
i am very lucky, today it took over 10 hours to decide to
work.

Like i said both computers have downloaded an auto-update
from Microsoft and they both have the problem, i need
some help soon.

Thanks, Motty

Get the computer booted into Windows.

Then use Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Restore.

Restore the system to the most recent restore point that is *prior* to
the download of those updates.

Good luck

If you have a Windows XP Installation CD and not an OEM 'System
Recovery" disk then you can boot the computer with the Windows XP
installation CD and do a Repair Install as per the instructions at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

That will preserve your installed applications, user data files, and
configuration settings. However Windows Updates will need to be
reinstalled.

WARNING:
After doing a Repair Install you should not connect the machine to the
Internet unless and until you are certain that a firewall is in place
and functioning and/or that a fully up to date antivirus program is
installed and functioning. Otherwise you may be vulnerable to
immediate infection by Blaster, Sasser, and other assorted nasties.

Good luck
