It appears that several people have had problems installing the latest
version of Windows Defender Beta 2. I am having problems with the install at
the point the WinDefend service tries t o start. The installer comes up with
a message stating that the service could not start - ensure you have
sufficient priveleges.
If I try to start the service manually, I receive Error 2147942403 - file
cannot be found".

I am running Windows 2000 SP4 (up to date with all patches from Windows
Update site). I am looged onto the machine as an administrator. I have also
tried running the install without anti-virus software running.

Hi Darrell,

Sorry I can't help you with this more, but I did a simple google search on
2147942403 and it appears your problem is related to starting the BITS
(Background Intelligent Transfer Service), the advice left me a bits
confused...

Take a look here and maybe someone more familiar with BITS can advise
further:

Hello Darrell,

Are the following services disabled?

To verify (Windows XP Windows Server 2003). Select:

I quote Stu--a regular contributor here:

Start/Run
Type "services.msc"
Click "OK"

Please check the following are started:

1.Automatic Updates
2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
3.Cryptographic Services
4.Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
5.System Restore Service

To verify that BITS is correctly configured :

1. Double-click `Background Intelligent Transfer Service.`
2. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then Apply.
3. Click the `Log On` tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in
every hardware profile that you have listed. If the service is disabled in
one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, Enable, and then
Apply.
4. Click the General tab and then Start.

If BITS starts successfully, visit the Windows Update Web site or the
Microsoft Update Web site to see if you can obtain updates. If it works OK,
change (2.) to automatic.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I am using a Win 2000 system. System restore service is
not included in Win 2000. Cryptographic service is also not listed. The other
services are set to either start manually or automatically. Windows Automatic
updates seems to be running fine, so I don't think there is a problem with
the BITs service itself.

I cannot understand why MS does not to appear to address this. I have seen
replies from (apparently) MS people in these groups relating to other issues.

This is an issue that appeared with the updated version of beta 2 back in
the middle of April.

I Totally agree
