I have a problem accessing shares over my domain network -
when the shares are done by computer name.

I created a share on computer A in my domain. In share I
added computer B with full control ( it is the only entry
in the share list ). In security I add computer B with
full control ( again it is the only entry ).

Now, when I go to computer B - it says "\\Computer
A\share is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. Access is denied."

Any ideas on what is going on?

I would suggest you grant sharing by username.

When you go to grant permission to the share and you are at the screen where
you pick your user (you stated there was only 1 entry there) use the
dropdown box entitled "look in" to select your domain. Then choose the
proper domain user account from the domain list.

Unfortunately, I can't do that. I came into an
organization that was in a workgroup/domain mixture. I
can't successfully migrate a local user to a domain user
without losing a bunch of the settings. Otherwise your
suggestion works.

So I'm still stuck with trying to figure out how to share
by a computer.

Hello Tad,
a few questions.

Is your machine a member of the domain or workgroup?
Can you browse the domain from your workstation?
Can you map a drive to a share in the domain and supply domain credentials
for the resource?

Hi.
Machines are domain ( but the user is logged on locally
because of the migration from workgroup to domain ).

All computers can browse the domain.
Can map a drive to any share.

Hello Tad,
Let me rephrase, Can you map a drive to the domain while logged onto the
workstation using one of your local accounts? You should be propted for
credentials and one you suppy the credentilas everything should be as you
requested.

i am trying to do the same. i have a couple of shares that i want to only access to from my computer labs. and not from the dormatories. i have added the machine account to the share permissions and given it change permissions to it. when a user with a domain user account logins into the machine, they get an access denied when accessing the drive mapping
