*I ended up answering my own question, but I thought I'd note m
solution here
in case anyone else has encounters this problem.
When you create an appointment in Outlook 2003 and invite attendees
make
sure the "Send as iCalendar" option is NOT checked under the Tool
menu.
Once I unchecked this option I was able to send appointments t
Outlook 2000
users without any difficulty (e.g., the message ha
accept/delete/tentative
buttons and integrated into the recipient's calendar i
accepted/tentative
was chosen).
My Outlook 2003 configuration was setup so that the default was t
send
appointments in iCalendar format. I was able to change this defaul
setting
by going to "Tools" on the main menu bar, and then selectin
"Options".
Choose the "Preferences" tab, and then click on the button labele
"Calendar
Options..." At the bottom of the next dialogue box there will be tw
check
boxes under "Advanced options". Uncheck the check box labeled "Whe
sending
meeting requests over the Internet, use iCalendar format." Now whe
you send
a meeting request the default will not be iCalendar. Of course, yo
can
still choose the iCalendar format on a case by case basis from withi
the
Tools menu of your appointment.
Again, here's the sequence to change the default setting:
from the main menu bar in Outlook 2003 --->
1. menu :: "Tools" --->
2. menu :: "Options" --->
3. tab :: "Preferences" --->
4. button :: "Caledar Options" --->
5. subsection :: "Advanced Options" --->
6. checkbox :: "When sending meeting requests over the Internet
use
iCalendar format."
I hope someone else finds this helpful.

The problem occurrs when I create a meeting using the calendar i Outlook
2003 and invite attendees who use Outlook 2000. The Outlook 200 users
receive an email, but rather than it containing an appointment i contains a
lot of cryptic text. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I've looked
through the knowledge base, but I can't seem to find mention o this. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks![/vbcol] *
