Running W2K Service Pack 4, when I click on Search
(Start>Search>For Files or Folders) in IE 6, I immediately
get an error saying "Explorer.exe has generated errors and
will be closed by Windows"

I get the same error:
"The instruction at 0x7824f3a79 referenced memory at
0x00000001. The Memory could not be read."

And then explorer terminates and my computer hangs.
Booting in safe mode reaches the same problem. All this
happened after I tried to download/install W2K Service
Pack 4.

I am experiencing something similar. SP4 causes Search
Window to not open or function properly while the search
Indexing Service is enabled. In addition, during this
time the task bar freezes and cannot be used without
rebooting, restarting service.exe or killing ciserv.exe

It seems that by disabling the Indexing Service removes
the corrects the problem. Does that work for you?
