Problem searching contacts in Outlook 2000

One of my users got a new PC and said that the problem
appeared in Outlook after that point, but was working
before. It does not happen with all contacts. Example:
she types in the name Williams and it does not bring up a
search results with all the people named Williams in her
contacts list. It doesn't even bring up W's, but shows a
different list of names. There are names that it will
find. What could be causing this intermittent problem?

Post useful details.
How is the search being conducted? In what view?
What sort order did you set for the Outlook Address Book?

user is doing a standard search by clicking find button,
and no matter whether she clicks the option for searching
text in the contacts or not, the surname she is looking
for is not coming up in a search result. As far as sort,
it is setup by last name and when you manually look at the
contacts, it has them listed by last name. Advanced
search will work better, however, as most users go want to
know why it did work before with the same version of the
same program. Kind of curious myself! Need more
specifics, let me know.

Thanks,

Kirkl

I assume you mean "File As..." since there is no option to sort the Outlook
Address Book by Last Name.
This search is done from what folder?
Have you tried removing and re-adding the Outlook Address Book? Are the
Contacts stored in a PST or exchange mailbox?

Russ, this is the user's default contacts folder on the
Exchange 2000 server. Yes, I did mean sort by last name.
I did the search with her to confirm. All she's doing is
opening up contacts, clicking on the Find button to bring
up a search window and then typing in a last name and
clicking Find Now button...on some surnames, it brings up
a search results, just not the names you are looking for.
If you have any bright ideas, that would be great.

Kirk

No, I was asking what sort order was specified for the Outlook Address Book.
There is no last name option there.
I've never seen the problem reported for PST's. Might try in an Exchange
group as it may be a problem on the Exchange side of things.

If you go to Tools, Services, and go to properties on
Outlook Address Book (Contacts), you can view by either
last name or first name. That's what I meant.

Any ideas on why the search is not working correctly?
Anyone ever seen this before?

Once again, that is not the case. You can view either by "First Name" or
"File As..."
"Last Name" is not an option. Have you examined how your File As... fields
are configured?

Russ,

I went back and you're right, it doesn't say last name,
but it does say Smith, John as opposed to the other option
which is to show names based on first name. The user in
question is showing last name, first name. Now that that
is settled, do you or anyone else have any idea what might
be causing the problem with erratic search results as
described in the first few threads? Any assistance or
ideas would be welcome.

Thanks,
