Problem saving as a .jpg

I have had this problem since re-installing XP Pro. It is the same as the
ones already posted. I had followed the knowledge base articles related to
this and clearing my temporary internet files does work...for a while.
However, I have to keep clearing this every few minutes. I am a little
afraid that this is jsut something I have to live with. I have no script
errors or unknown objects installed and have manually cleared the cache as
per article 810978. Is there a permenant fix for this?

This is not a perfect solution, but at least you can automate this delete.
Instead of clicking on Delete files, click on the Advanced tab of that
window. Scroll down to find Security and check the box "Delete....when
closing browser".
Also check the amount of space allocated for your temporary files. Click on
the Settings button next to the Delete files button and see what you have.
Try allocating about 1200 MB and see if this will help.

I have 2481MB set for the Temp files, I did change the setting as you
sugested, though.
Thanks

If you have 2481 MB set for temp files, I don't understand why you are
running out of space. This is twice what I would suggest. Let us know what
happens with the new settings. There is no reason for you to run out of
space and have to delete your temporary files as you are on the Internet.
Let us know if the new settings work. If not we have to start again to find
a solution.

He's cache is too large. There are two limits. Number of files (hard coded) and amount of space. The cache cleanup (removing oldest entries to allow new entries) only runs when the size of files exceeds the space limit.

Either reduce the size of the cache, clear it manually when full, or download bigger, on average, files. 1 & 2 are the most sensible.

In simple terms the index.dat is full. MS has, at last, decided to fix sometime in the future. The reason that it can save as a bmp is because that's what windows uses internally (everything you see on a screen is a bmp - it can't find the file in the cache but can use the bitmap it made of the jpeg/gif/png to show you the picture. )

I tried the cache at 1.0 GB and 2.0 GB and I the issue remains. In addition,
after manually clearing the cache, I can save as .jpg for a time, then it
reverts to the .bmp default without much consistency but definitely before 1
GB of browsing.
I don't know if this has a bearing or not, but at the same time this issue
occurred, something else happened: the back button will reload the page -
every time. I have changed the "check for newer versions of stored pages"
options to every setting (don't know if that matters) but without a fix. It
is currently "every time I start Win Exp". I dont know if they are related.

David,

You are a gentleman and a scholar. I changed the settings to 20 MB and the
problem is cured. This may be the issue with some other users as when XP was
installed, the default cache setting was over 2GB.

Thanks a million!
Mark

Try upping the size in 20 meg increments. You want the cache to be at least the size of the biggest file you download so if the download fails it can restart the download from the cache. Or just up the cache those times you download a big file (like a service pack).
