I have a shared Access 2002 database that is having a
weird problem with printing reports. Occasionally, NOT
ALL THE TIME, when printing reports users are getting the
error: "There was a problem retrieving printer
information for this object. The object may have been
sent to a printer that is unavailable."
The two Microsoft articles on this error, Q282385 and
Q294555, have been investigated and do not pertain.
The database is on a network drive in a Windows 2000
Server with a mixed environment of Windows XP and Windows
2000 desktops.
The problem occurs like this:
A user with HP Laserjet 4000 as their default printer
tries to print a report. During a period that the report
will not run, if you go to design view, you will find
that although the setting IS INDEED SET to print to
the "default printer", it is trying to print to a
different printer. Often the printers it is trying to
print to are the local printers in offices on another
floor. We have determined that the printers that the
reports are erroneously printing to are not always "on",
so indeed they are sometimes unavailable.
However, we have no idea why Access IS NOT HONORING the
user's default printer and is trying to print to these
other printers instead. All other applications do not
experience this printing problem. The printers involved
are a variety of HPs: Hp 1000, 1100, 1300, 4000, HP
laserjet III, Hp laserjet 6 plus a variety of inkjets,
some shared through PCs and some with jet direct cards.
Strangely, there is a "kludgy" fix that works. When the
report on User A's machine will not print, if I go to
User B's machine (in another department), bring up the
report, choose "Specific Printer" and choose the printer
type of User A, print, and then change back to "Default
Printer" and Save, then they GO BACK to User A's
computer, the report will print fine!
Can anyone help?? This is driving us crazy!
Thanks loads.
