Problem renaming an .EXE file for emailing

It was suggested to me that I might be able to rename an *.EXE file (a
RunMe.EXE animated email project created with Microsoft PictureIt) to avoid
the .exe file attachment from being deleted from the email (for security
reasons) by the recipient's ISP. Also that once received, the recipient
could rename back to .EXE and make it run as it was originally intended to
run before I removed the EXE extension. Everybody uses Outlook Express 6.
When I rename the file, I do not get any warning about changing the
properties of the file and therefore its utility, instead it takes the name
I give it and continues to exist as an exe file but with a new name when it
goes into the email. In other words, it didn't work, so some people cannot
get it.
Basically my dilemma is: Can I rename an *.EXE file so it can get through
recipient's security and then have that person voluntarilly change the
extension back so it will run? How do I do it?
Thanks, Josie

Thanks for your idea, just what I needed, and so simple. I would have never
thought of that being so focused on the "renaming" thing. But just out of
curiosity, is it possible to rename and do what I was trying to do? Josie

It should be possible, but sometimes it's just not worth fighting those
sorts of battles.

just rename it by ADDING .txt to the end:

runme.exe.txt

That SHOULD work, unless Outlook is actually examining the file contents
and detecting that it's an executable image. In that case the best bet
would be to simply ZIP it.

Ever since that outlook security patch came out 3 years ago I have always
ZIP'd all attachments, it just seems to work best for virtually everyone.

Thanks for the suggestion, at least I know how to make that option work, but
like you say its easier and quicker to zip them, particularly with WinZip
easy features to zip and email. I found out that the reason I could not get
the warning from Windows was because I had the "Hide extensions for known
file types" feature of -Tools- Folder Options- View- checked so I could not
get the EXE extension to show in the folder and therefore when I tried to
rename it it kept the original extension even when renamed. Thought I'd
mention it for others to know about it in case it happens to them. Thanks,
again.Josie
