I bought a laptop second hand, the seller had installed
XP for checking, he said he installed all latest updates
etc which I don't want to lose. He told me to purchase
XP and install to legitimise. I bought a copy of XP home
OEM sealed through an auction site. When I installed I
ended up with a prompt at start up asking which one I
wanted to use. I've adjusted boot.ini back to the
original XP. Do I now have a hard drive full of
duplicate operating system? How do I legitimise my one
without losing all the original updates and programes he
has installed....activate his using my codes???

You probably cannot - it is doubtful he installed XP using an OEM copy.
The "updates" he spoke of are free for download. I would suggest starting
from scratch with your own copy of Windows XP. Then going to
windowsupdate.microsoft.com (after enabling the built in firewall) and
updating your system.
