Hi,

I'm having a problem reinstalling Win2k after replacing the hard drive.

It gets to the point after entering the CD Key and it asks for the previous
version. This is an upgrade version I'm reinstalling. I put in a Win95
OSR2 cd but it doesn't recognize it. The cd looks good when put in another
machine.

What is it looking for? Can I fake it out?

Is there a work around?

Should I give up and buy a replacement full version off eBay?

I looked in the KB but I must be using the wrong search. I don't get any
hits at all.

Try installing Win 95 OSR2 first then install Win 2000 Pro.

Greetings --

Is the Win95 OSR2 CD a true installation CD, complete with the
"\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or is it an OEM "Recovery" CD? Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose, as it will not
have contain the file that the upgrade setup routine needs to find.

If all you do have is a Recovery CD, you'll have to use it to
first install Win95, and then perform the upgrade.

The previous version of windows must be installed before you attempt to
install windows 2000.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/professional/howtobuy/upgrading/path/win9x.asp has details on how to do a successful upgrade from Windows 9x.

I think it's a true installation CD. It does have Win95 with .cab files.
And also admin, datalink, demos, drivers, funstuff, help, other, and sampler
at the root level. The volume name on it is Win95_OSR25. It says on it
it's on OEM cd.

Right now it's more of a curious oddity that Win2K wouldn't take it. Right
now I can only assume that there is a bug in the setup process.

Since I posted this morning I have managed to find my original Win95 Upgrade
CD (purchased when I was still running Windows 3.11) and Win2K took that.
I'm thinking maybe I should make a backup of this CD lest it gets scratched
and I'm left with nothing.
