When I open any workbook using Excel 97 and then try to open another
instance of Excel, I always get a message saying something like, "
Personal.xls is being modified by 'me' ." I certainly am not
deliberately modifying personal.xls. When I change its attribute to
'read only' this does not happen.

Can someone tell me what might be causing this message by trying to
modify personal.xls and what I can do about it?

Thank you.

A follow on to this problem.

With no other instance of Exel running that I am able to detect, if I
try to open personal.xls, I get a message that says something like this,
"you cannot run two copies of the same worksheet."

Thanks again.

Hi

Personal.xls is the workbook where you usually store macros. It will be in
your XLStart folder which means that whenever you start XL, it will open -
and your macros will be available. When you try to start another instance of
XL it tries to open personal.xls again - and reports that it is already
open.

Thank you very much, Andy.

That makes sense! Why didn't I think of it. However, that leaves me
still wondering who or what is trying to modify it as I posed in my
first post in this thread.

Jack,

Time for some ritual. Try this:

Start - Run - type: excel /regserver

This resets Excel's registry entries.

Thank you, Earl. That was the first thing I tried for I have
encountered this before when opening a 'normal' workbook. This time to
no avail.
