I have a install of XP-Home edition on a friend's pc that has began refusing
to go to some of the MS web sites. The problem first appeared when trying
to use MSN Explorer. I also noticed that hotmail doesn't work, and Windows
Update gives an error message about not being able to download active-x
controls. I followed instructions in a MS Q article to remove the V4 folder
in Program Files and the iu*.dll files under the dllcache and system32
folders. After doing this, still didn't make a difference. Tried to set
the settings for security on the Internet zone to different settings, but
doesn't seem able to keep settings. I reinstalled both IE and MSN Explorer,
still no luck. I also thought that the current user may not be an
adminstrator, but the system says that the current user is an administrator.
I am the MS server specialist and helpdesk manager for my company, and I am
out of ideas. My last resort is to wipe and reload, but I would like to
avoid if possible. Any ideas?

IE6 as well as XP are just too messed up to even bother
with anymore. From not having Java to this damn bug. I
can't see any pictures on most pages unless I manually
change my encoding EVERYTIME! I have many other problems
with my IE6 such as yours. After searching extensively for
a fix (I tried the same ones as you to no avail) I finally
went to www.netscape.com and downloaded 7.1. Everything
works great, and I will continue to use it until Microsoft
can get their stuff together!
