Thanks again, David.
I have an internet router which hides my IP address, so I am not too concerned about a PC firewall. I tried turning on the XP firewall, but it blocked my "activitiy monitor" program from accessing my kids computers. There don't appear to be too many setting in the XP firewall. Is there one to allow things like spyware to run between computers on my local network?

My version of ZA wan't compatable with XP when it was in beta. I use the XP firewall. But enable one or the other NOW. Then virus scan. You can be infected within seconds.
As I don't use ZA I don't follow it's problems. As their site is unusuable ....

OK, now we are getting somewhere. I ran setup with data access unchecked. All is now OK with ZoneAlarm off. The "unable to send command" error now happens with both Word and Excel docs when ZoneAlarm is on. Is there a way to fix this, or should I dump ZoneAlarm. What firewall program do you like?
I seem to remember that ZoneAlarm can be tricky to uninstall. I haven't upgraded in a while. Are the new Pro versions any better?
:
I meant did word start working after ZA was disabled. Setup shouldn't care. ZA causes some problems with file associations in explorer (only some versions - I don't use it). So check that the problem remains while ZA is disabled. If so reenable it straight away (as you may become infected if it's down).
In setup uncheck Data Access.
This is something to do with multiple office versions. You may not have installed dbf in your later versions and if so can't install it now..

I did shut down zonealarm before running setup. The setup aborted after that error message.
p.s. Sorry about the multiple posts. I received post errors, and didn't think they were going in.
:
As you are unlikely to have dbase files did it otherwise work and did you disable zone alarm.

I couldn't find an office setup program on my hard disk, so I tried the one on the installation CD (office 97 Pro). With either the "/r /y" option or a regular re-install I received the following error: "configuration of ODBC Microsoft Dbase Driver (*.dbf) driver failed".
:
Repairing Word's Files and Registry Settings (Word 97 only)
Word's setup program can be used to repair Word's registry settings.
Use Start Menu, then Run and browse to Word's Startup program (usually C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup) and add /r or /r /y to the end of the line.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup\Setup.exe /r /y
Switch Meaning
/r Reinstalls Word using the options of the last installation.
/y [Used with /r] Reinstalls Word using the options of the last installation without coping the files.
In Word 2000 choose Repair Word from the Help menu.

I have an old version of office (97). I don't think there is a "detect and repair" in it.
:
Disable Zone Alarm
Use Detect & Repair from Word's Help menu.

I can no longer open office or html documents from Windows Explorer or the "recent documents" list. With Excel or HTML files I get the error "There was a problem sending the command to the program". With MS Word files the doc extension is appended to the first part of the path instead of the end, and I get multiple error messages. For instance path C:\Documents and Settings\ would result in error "cannot open C:\Documents.doc" followed by "cannot open settings\myname".
Text files work OK, as do pdf files. Clicking on URL links cause two copies of IE to open, one blank and one with the proper site displayed. A "problem sending command to the program" error is also displayed in this case.
All of this used to work fine. I can't say when it stopped working exactly.
Can anyone help?
