Hi.

We have problmes opening a couple of files in excel, without any specific
error message. The application just "hangs". When we log on to WXP as
another user, the files work fine.

We have re-installed excel, deleted and recreated the user profile which has
problems, but still no luck.

Anybody got a clue why this is happening?

The computer excel is running on is a DELL Optiplex Pentium HyperThreading
machine.

Thansk in advance.

Sometimes cleaning up the windows Temp folder will help.

If that doesn't help, sometimes the file that contains the toolbar
customizations can be a problem.

Start Excel in safe mode (to avoid loading anything that could cause problems
(toolbars/addins/macros)

With excel closed
windows start button|run
excel /safe

Back to excel to test it.

If that worked, maybe it was a toolbar that went bad.

close excel
Windows|start button|find/search)
look for *.xlb
Rename them all to *.xlbOLD

Back to excel to test.

If it worked, just delete those *.xlbold files and rebuild any toolbars at your
leisure.

If none of this worked, Chip Pearson has documented some techniques to try when
you're having trouble starting excel.

I have tried all this already, with no luck.

Could these problems be caused by security updates?

I don't have a guess if it's a security update issue--but my gut feeling is no.
(Well, I guess I did have a guess!)

The same thing happened when you started in safe mode?

Yes, same thing happened when starting in Safe-mode....

I was also not able to make a system restore to any date or restore point,
so I reinstalled Windows XP and Office XP, updated the security updates up
to the ones that says Q******(SP2), and everything seems to work fine.

Strangest thing was that Microsoft removed all of the security updates with
Q****(SP2) in the name during yesterday......

Got another computer with the same problem.... Don't like that the user has
to be without a computer for a 2-3 hours, while I re-install Windows and
Offiec and any other software......

I don't have another guess. Good luck.
