When I try to open an Excel file from the shortcuts on my
desk top or even from Windows Explorer I get the following
message:
"Can not find the file c:\Report\.......xls (or one of its
components). Make sure the the path and filename are
correct and all required libraries are available"

If I go to file - open- and then go to root directory
there is no problem opening. Other office programms are
working fine. I re-installed Office and downloaded all
the service packs but no change. Scanned the system for
virus but found nothing.

Can someone help?

It sounds like the shortcut on your desktop is pointing to a particular
worksheet, that was located in the Reports directory and now is no longer
there, and not to Excel in general. Could that be the case?

I would browse to the file excel.exe and create a new shortcut from that.

My Excel 2003 shortcut points here:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE"

Hope this helps.

We have the same problem here on multiple computers. And
the shortcuts are okay... It also happens when you double-
click an excel file in windows explorer, Excel will open,
but the file doesn't, the only way to open a file is :
File --> Open.

Can anyone help???

It appears that this is not an isolated problem. I am
having the same "lock up" as the person below. There
seems to be an answer at

http://www.experts-
exchange.com/Applications/Q_21060482.html

but the problem is you have to pay for the answer which I
am loathe to do! Anyone desperate enough yet to get their
wallet out and find the answer?

Try selecting Tools/Options/General from the Excel menu and make sure
the "Ignore other applications" checkbox is not selected.
