Hello,

The documents I've typed at home on Microsoft Works Word Processor on XP,
don't open on the computer at work which is Windows 98. Is there any way
round this?

Thanks.

Theresa

You should be posting in an office or word group, but XP and 98 have nothing
to do with the problem, the version of word on each PC is likely the issue.

What program are you trying to use to open the files? On your Microsoft
Works (at home) when you save the documents you can use "Save as..."
and select a format which might be more compatible with the application
or Works version that you use on the Windows 98 computer.

Try opening the doc on your XP machine. Then...

File -> save as ->

and change the "save as type" to something like "Word 6.0/95" or perhaps rtf

If you loose important formating data try other file formats

First of all, note that this has nothing to do with Windows XP vs Windows
98. It has to do with what application software is installed on the two
different machines.

If you don't have Microsoft Works installed on your Windows 98 machine, it
can't open files in native Works format, regardless of what operating
system they were created under.

The first thing you need to find out is what word processing software you
have installed on your work computer. Assuming that it is Microsoft Word
(which is likely), Word can read rtf files, and I believe Works can create
rtf files. So save your home documents in rtf format and you'll be able to
read them at work.

Thank you so much everyone. Have just used the "save as" function and
emailed myself at work with a doc. in rtf. Can't wait to see if it works.

Best wishes,
Theresa

You're welcome. If it's Word you have at work, I''m sure it will work.

As a matter of fact, almost every word processor supports rtf, so it's
almost guaranteed to work. The only question in my mind was whether Works
could generate it.

If you had any fancy formatting, you may lose some of it, but all the text
should be fine.

Hi there,

It didn't work.. I'm now thinking that Works didn't generate rtf as you say.
When emailing the attachment, the file had .wps and not .rtf, even though I
saved it as rtf. I'm going to have a go at some converters and see if they
help.

Many thanks,
Theresa

If all else fails, you could post in a Works or Word newsgroup, which would
be more conducive to your issue.
