I hope this is not a repost but I've read through the
newsgroup and tried the solutions posted to no avail.

I have a WinXP Home pc with the printer hooked up
locally. I use a Linksys router BEFSR41 to share my
cable internet connection with a laptop that runs on
Windows 2000 Professional.

I want to set up a home network so that I can access the
printer from the Windows 2000 machine and share files
between both machines.

I ran the Network Setup Wizard on the XP machine and
attempted to run the Wizard on the 2000 machine but it's
not compatible. I set up a Workgroup on my XP machine
called GEOHOME, but when I try to view it in My Network
Places it says it's not accessible. I enabled NetBios
for TCP/IP for both the XP and the 2000 machine. I
joined the GEOHOME Workgroup on the 2000 machine and can
see this in my network places but I can't access the XP
pc nor can I see the printer on the network (both are
shared).

I'd appreciate any help as 4 hours searching the MS
Knowledge base has gotten me zip.

Thanks,
Geoff

Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Dear Geoff,

You must make sure you have the IP Address setup.
1. use ipconfig /all command
To check both machine make sure they are
in the same Class.
e.g. 192.168.0.101
192.168.0.102
2. They have the same WORKGROUP name.
3. You can use MyNetworkplace on your DESKTOP
to check for your machine.
4. Check for your SHARE property.
5. If you setup everything, you can see
the opposite machine.

Hope this help you out !
Good Luck.

Andrew

To address your points:

1. Both machines are set up to obtain the ip address
automatically, which I believe they must be in order to
work with my cable internet provider.
2. Both machines have the same Workgroup name
3. I've been using My Network Places and it says my
machine is "inaccessible." I'm logged in as the admin.
4. I have enabled sharing.
5. Nope - still doesn't work...

I read your posts and attempted to enable these solutions
before I posted, though I'm not clear why I need to
uninstall the firewall program before setting up the
network and I'm not clear on how to "unbind" File and
Printer Sharing from the other network protocols.

If you have Macafee Personal firewall (Or others perhaps)
try setting them to allow inbound access for the IP
address of the other system. I just did it and now can
see the WIN98 machine from the XP-Pro machine (including
the HP printer !) and vice-versa

Hi. A couple of things lately I have found going wrong with networking
using XP.

Disable Firewalls on NICs.
Check permissions on all shares.
Workgroups are the same.
Check all computer names are unique
Logons are the same on all machines
or add additional logons to the users list on all machines.
Check Protocols are the same
Check IPs are 192.168.0.x with mask 255.255.255.0 for example
If all that is ok here is something else to consider - the 'weird' part that
I have come across that is not consistent. I have the below on my network
set to enable and it works. However on other networks setup exactly the
same as mine it must be disabled. I haven't found out y yet.

Are you using any passwords for your logins or shares?

If not then I have found either use passwords or on XP machine not working
go to control panel, administrative tools, local security policy, local
policies, security options - double click on 'accounts: limit local account
use of blank passwords ...' and set to disable. Click OK, Close policy and
reboot. Does it work now?

Good Luck
Lewis
