Problem networking Epson C86

I'm trying to set up a two computer network to include access to my
C86. The "main" PC, to which the printer is attached, is a WinXP HOme
desktop. The other is an elderly laptop running W98. They are
networked through a Linksys ADSL wired router and both can "see" each
other and share allowed files. The laptop can also "see" the Epson
printer on the other PC (sharing is enabled).

The printer works fine on both PC's in standalone mode. What I'm
trying to do is to "install" the networked printer on the laptop. I
looked first at installing additional drivers on the WinXP computer,
but when it asked for the Win98 disk to be loaded I decided to do it
the other way and install the drivers on the laptop.

I went through the procedure again and eventually it told me that a
driver was already installed and recommended using it. Great! But on
clicking OK I got:

THis printer could not be installed. Quit all programs, restart
Windows............... If the problem persists, contact your system
administrator.

Well, it does persist! Any kind advice would be welcomed!

Go to My Computer, fish on thru to your printer until you can see it on
your laptop, then right click and look for "Connect" and single click on
that. Please let me know if this helps. We do it with W2000 and XP.

You've already gone thru the "Add Printer" routine, right?

Many thanks for the response. Yes, I had been thru Add Printer and
it's at the end of that where the problem arises (Cannot install....)
So the network printer doesn't appear in the list of printers although
it *can* be seen in Network Neighbourhood".

And, in case I didn't mention it, yes I *did* try to install it as a
network (rather than local) printer, although it *is* already
installed as a local printer as well (and I need to keep it that way
if possible so I can also print away from the network).

Regards and thanks,

Networking between XP and '98 can be a little annoying. There are some
hints here (such as not having spaces in the printer name, and no
longer than 8 characters), but the original poster, unfortunately,
doesn't mention how he fixed the problem at the end!

You might want to check out a networking newsgroup as well, since the
issue is more with the network than the printer itself, but I'm sure
someone here will have the experience to help you get it working.
However, it might be more convenient in the long run for you to buy a
print server.

Thank you very much to who have tried to help. Just something more to
add, although I don't know whether it takes us any further forward.

Having failed to install the networked printer from the laptop, the
mountain went to Mohammed and I tried the "install extra driver"
routine in Win XP (the printer's host PC). I chose Win95/98 as the
target and, when it asked for drivers, inserted (first) the Epson
setup disk. It then asked for the Windows 95, 98 and Me disk so I
inserted Win98. It then complained that "The file 'EPNDRV' driver on
Windows 95, 98 and Me disk is needed" and, since this could be found
nowhere, that's where I ground to a halt once more. In fact I can't
find EPNDRV (or its compressed form) anywhere, not even in CAB files.
How do I find it?

I'm spitting feathers now!! Why do all the books and stuff on the
forums make it sound so easy.......... Bahhhhh!

Has *anyone* managed to set up this or any other recent Epson printer
on a network like this?

You didn't say if, when you eventually get to the printer in Network
Neighborhood and right click on it and do the "connect" if that solves
the problem. Do you understand that?

When I right click the option to connect does not appear. The options
I get are:
Open, Install, Capture Printer Port, Create Shortcut, Properties.

However I have found the workaround. Because the printer is already
installed as a stand alone, I've captured the port to the network and
it works, although perhaps not as elegantly as the "proper" way.
