I have a large pst file from a computer backup, from a computer running
Outlook (Office XP). I need to set up this Outlook data on another pc,
running Outlook 2000. I copied the pst file over, replacing the existing
file (the path was different than in the newer version of Outlook). All
folders, inbox, etc are there, with one exception. One the newer version of
Outlook, in the Outlook Today list, Contacts was present, but with a
subfolder called personal. However, on Outlook 2000, the subfolder called
personal is missing.

When I look under tools/address book.... I get the message, 'the address
list could not be displayed. The contacts folder associated with this
address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you
do not have permissions.' How can I get my personal addresses back?
Thanks.

Overwriting a PST is not a good idea.
You need to reset your Outlook Address Book.
You need to post your mail support mode if you don't know how.

I kept a copy of the original PST that I overwrote, just in case. Also, I
have only the backup files from the computer with the new Outlook version,
not the computer itself. If it is easier to apply this PST file to a
computer running Office XP instead of Office 2000, that is an option for me.
As for the mail support mode, the only email account used is accessed via a
pop3 server, but I don't know if it is configured to connect to a MS
exchange server as well. If you need this information as well, please tell
me how to confirm this point. How do you suggest I proceed? Thanks.

Good. Then we may just be able to solve this by resetting the Outlook
Address Book.
Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook Address Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box. You may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose to show your
Contacts folder.

Tools |Services shows a window listing four items:

Internet e-mail (properties shows typical server, connection, etc info for
email account)

Personal Folders (properties shows path to PST file and other info)

Outlook Address Book (properties shows a listing of three items: Contacts:
Personal Folders; 'foldername': Personal Folders; and thirdly Contacts:

instructions on this window as per your instructions: To designate a
contacts folder as an outlook address book, go to the properties dialog box
for the contacts folder. On the outlook address book tab, select the 'show
this folder as an e-mail address book' check box. Other selections on this
same window include to remove an address book, and order in which to show
names in book.

Personal Address Book (properties shows two tabs: Notes, and Personal
Address Book. The latter shows the path to this file which is a PAB file
(not my file from my backup) and order in which to show names in book.

I'm not sure how to proceed now.

There's the problem. You should only have one reference to a Contacts Folder
in the Outlook Address Book, and you now have three. Remove the extras.
That's what happens when you overwrite PST files. The old references do no
get removed. It is also highly unlikely that you need the PAB Service. PAB's
have not been in use for years. Unless you have some special need to use a
PAB file, remove the PAB Servioce as well.

Good. We've got it. Could you please indicate below which of the
duplicates should be removed? Although very comfortable with OE, I'm going
by instinct only with Outlook. I did remove the PAB item as you
recommended. (When I searched through my backup, I found no PAB file). So

Doesn't matter. Remove any two. Don't worry, it you remove the wrong one,
just re-add it and direct it to the Contacts Folder in the PST that
currently resides in your profile, then remove the others. You're not going
to remove any data here, only settings.

Just remove and re-add the Outlook Address Book Service, then. It's not hard
and it works.

It's not necessary to import the PST. Just open it in Outlook and copy what
you need from it. That way you won't end up breaking any settings.

So
now I'm left with three items listed under Tools|Services. Which to remove?
Thanks.

There's the problem. You should only have one reference to a Contacts
Folder
in the Outlook Address Book, and you now have three. Remove the extras.
That's what happens when you overwrite PST files. The old references
do
no
get removed. It is also highly unlikely that you need the PAB Service.
PAB's
have not been in use for years. Unless you have some special need to
use
a
PAB file, remove the PAB Servioce as well.

Tools |Services shows a window listing four items:

Internet e-mail (properties shows typical server, connection, etc info
for
email account)

Personal Folders (properties shows path to PST file and other info)

Outlook Address Book (properties shows a listing of three items:
Contacts:
Personal Folders; 'foldername': Personal Folders; and thirdly Contacts:
Personal Folders (which is the one I want to display)) It gives
instructions on this window as per your instructions: To
designate
selections
on
this
same window include to remove an address book, and order in which to
show
names in book.

Personal Address Book (properties shows two tabs: Notes, and Personal
Address Book. The latter shows the path to this file which is a PAB
file
(not my file from my backup) and order in which to show names in book.

I'm not sure how to proceed now.

Good. Then we may just be able to solve this by resetting the Outlook
Address Book.
Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book
service
is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders
you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook
Address
Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box.
You
may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose
to
show
your
Contacts folder.

It says 'Corporate or Workgroup'.

I kept a copy of the original PST that I overwrote, just in
case.
Also,
I
have only the backup files from the computer with the new
Outlook
version,
not the computer itself. If it is easier to apply this
PST
file
to
a
computer running Office XP instead of Office 2000, that is an
option
for
me.
As for the mail support mode, the only email account used is
accessed
via
a
pop3 server, but I don't know if it is configured to
connect
to
a
MS
exchange server as well. If you need this information as well,
please
tell
me how to confirm this point. How do you suggest I proceed?
Thanks.

Overwriting a PST is not a good idea.
You need to reset your Outlook Address Book.
You need to post your mail support mode if you don't
know
how.

I have a large pst file from a computer backup, from a
computer
running
Outlook (Office XP). I need to set up this Outlook
data
on
another
pc,
running Outlook 2000. I copied the pst file over, replacing
the
existing
file (the path was different than in the newer version of
Outlook).
All
folders, inbox, etc are there, with one exception.
One
the
newer
version
of
Outlook, in the Outlook Today list, Contacts was present,
but
with
a
subfolder called personal. However, on Outlook 2000, the
subfolder
called
personal is missing.

When I look under tools/address book.... I get the message,
'the
address
list could not be displayed. The contacts folder associated
with
this
address list could not be opened; it may have been
moved
or
deleted,
or
you
do not have permissions.' How can I get my personal
addresses
back?
Thanks.

I got it working properly. It took some time and some adding and removing
contacts, but I think I've got the hang of it now. Thank you very much for
your help and your patience.

Just remove and re-add the Outlook Address Book Service, then. It's not hard
and it works.

It's not necessary to import the PST. Just open it in Outlook and copy what
you need from it. That way you won't end up breaking any settings.

Well, I'm not getting anywhere here. I can't seem to make those personal
addresses appear out of the PST file. To simplify this, we could skip this
intermediate step altogether (getting the PST setup properly in Outlook 2000
pc). I have another pc available for use with Office 2003 installed. Could
you please tell me how to 'import' the PST file to that properly? Thanks.

Russ Valentine said:
Doesn't matter. Remove any two. Don't worry, it you remove the wrong one,
just re-add it and direct it to the Contacts Folder in the PST that
currently resides in your profile, then remove the others. You're not going
to remove any data here, only settings.

Good. We've got it. Could you please indicate below which of the
duplicates should be removed? Although very comfortable with OE, I'm
going
by instinct only with Outlook. I did remove the PAB item as you
recommended. (When I searched through my backup, I found no PAB file).
So
