I have installed Windows XP (sp1 integrated) on my friend's computer lately.
When they go on the internet, a while after any download begins, windows
displays a message that the computer must restart in around 30 seconds..
there is a countdown and I cannot do anything about it.. i have norton 2004
installed and no viruses at all.. I did a clean installation, formatted
partition C using NTFS (drive D is store drive) when I did that windows xp
installation.. this problems happens when we connect to the internet.. i am
not sure if it happens if not being connected to the internet.. even when I
begin windows updates, i get that message after 15 minutes or so.. what is
wrong?

plz help.. thanx!!

I can't help you with the cause if you're sure that the computer is not
infected with a virus.

However, If you type "shutdown -a" in the Run box from the Start Menu you
should terminate the process that's turning the system off :)

strange.. i see that X sign and that the computer must restart within a
miunute.. it asks me to quickly save my work, and there is no option
anywhere to prevent it from restarting... it even has a countdown! There
must be someonen else who knows about this problem! :(

What you're describing is a classic example of infection
by the Blaster worm or a variant. You stated that the CD
contained SP1, but there is Update Rollup 1, which
includes the patch protecting against the Blaster, plus
there have been several other critical updates posted
since Update Rollup 1 was released. The following is a
post by Jupiter Jones in response to a similar posting as
yours:

"You most likely have a worm W32.Blaster.Worm
DISCONNECT the subject computer from any network
IMMEDIATELY.

If necessary to stop the reboot process:
Start/Run
Type "shutdown -a" ENTER

Install or enable a firewall IMMEDIATELY, before
connecting to the
internet:

VERY IMPORTANT to follow ALL steps, closing ports or
installing the
patch is NOT enough.
Download the patch and regedit referenced in the article
below.
You may need to do this at an uninfected computer and
burn to CD or
save on floppies.
Each file is small enough to fit on a floppy.

Follow this to clean and protect your computer:

After this is resolved prevent similar occurrences by
installing ALL
Critical Updates from Windows Update.
Keep antivirus up to date and run at least weekly.
Install or enable a firewall.
